Professionally Speaking

Discussion/Reflection Questions

May 2009:

Ready or Not

by Edward Grube

  • Recall for yourself or share with your group two or three changes you plan to make before next school term. If you can’t come up with any changes or don’t plan any, justify your action.

  • Which book have you selected for summer reading? What other books by this author, if any, have you read?

  • Many schools require teachers to "work" during summer months. Would your board or congregation allow reading to increase your professional skills to count for work? If not, what might you do to advance your cause?

  • What out-and-out, purely-for-fun activity do you plan for the summer? If you have no such plans, what might be the advantage of making some? What are the obstacles?

  • May’s Professionally Speaking has five signs that may suggest you would better serve God outside of teaching. Evaluate yourself. If you find yourself exhibiting any of those signs, talk over the situation with your family and with a trusted colleague.
