2006 LEA National DCE Conference FAQS

Why is the conference being held in San Diego?

The leadership team for DCEnet discussed various options for the location of the 2006 Conference.  In making our decision, we relied upon replies to a survey regarding the conference which was conducted via the DCEnet listserv and on past history of DCE Conference locations.  Our final decision came down to the following factors: the LEA National DCE Conference and other Synodical events that DCEs often participate in have never been held on the west coast, and the past practice of holding the DCE Conference in the city of the next LCMS National Youth Gathering (NYG) did not appear as appealing as the 2007 NYG was scheduled to return to New Orleans.

Why is the hotel cost so high?

LEA uses a meeting planning service to help secure hotel and hotel services for its professional conferences.  This service presented several hotels in the San Diego area to the DCEnet Leadership Team for consideration.  The costs for the hotels were basically within $20 of each other.  Therefore, we made the final decision based on the quality of the facilities and the location of the Omni in proximity to other features that made San Diego an attractive destination for the conference.

What does my registration fee cover?

The registration fee covers conference materials, all program costs, the Sunday evening banquet, Monday lunch and Monday evening dessert.

How can I reduce my hotel costs?

Please feel free to ask fellow DCEs if anyone is looking for a roommate for the conference via the DCEnet listserv.  The cost of $159 per night is good for anywhere from 1 to 4 people per room.

Why did the printed registration material come out so late?

LEA’s practice is to make registration for all national conferences available about six months prior to the event, primarily to ensure that all program and financial elements are final.  Initial information about dates, location, hotel costs, and approximate registration fee were announced on the DCEnet listserv and LEA’s web site on Tuesday, February 22, 2005.

Why are there no sectionals?

In planning for this conference, the DCEnet Leadership Team in conjunction with the Conference Planning Team looked at providing a schedule that provided for more time for worship, Bible study and a keynote speaker than was allowed by past conferences, thereby removing sectionals from the schedule.  No sectionals also allows for  a slower more relaxed pace and time for much needed “sabbath” for DCEs who of necessity must normally move at break-neck speed.

Why is the conference one day shorter than past conferences?

Recognizing that a conference on the west coast would mean higher travel costs, a decision was made to reduce the number of days to keep the cost within reach for most DCE’s.  Programming time has been condensed to allow for more interaction and to emphasize quality.

Why should I be an LEA member?

While LEA membership is not required for those interested in participating in the LEA National DCE Conference, LEA membership offers a variety of benefits.  One “constant” benefit of LEA membership is the access to the DCEnet listserv.  This listserv is a fantastic forum for asking questions of fellow DCEs and obtaining resources in just about any area covered by a DCE.  In addition, LEA membership provides for discounted registration fees for the triennial DCE Conference and the triennial LEA Convocation.  Membership in LEA provides one way for you, as a DCE, to be linked to other DCEs, to become more thoroughly equipped through the sharing of resources, and to be affirmed in your role of carrying out the Great Commission.

Can I mail my registration in or do I have to register online?

You may register online at www.regonline.com/26474; mail your registration form to LEA National DCE Conference, 7400 Augusta St.  River Forest, IL 60305; or fax your form to 708-209-3458.

Who received the registration mailing?

Registration brochures were mailed to a combined list of LEA DCEnet members and all DCEs provided on an official LCMS list.

How does LEA allocate registration fees for this event?

Registration fees for the LEA National DCE Conference cover about 65% of the total conference costs.  Grants, sponsorships, exhibitors and advertising account for the rest.  The conference budget provides for all revenue and expenses related to the conference as well as some dollars to be used for the planning of future DCEnet events and resources.

How will DCEnet and LEA be addressing the concerns of DCEs in the near future?

The Leadership Team of DCEnet is currently working with LEA Executive Director, Jonathan Laabs, to address several questions related to DCE ministry and its partnership with LEA.

At the 2006 DCE Summit, which will be held the two days preceding the 2006 LEA National DCE Conference, the DCEnet Leadership Team and Jonathan Laabs will meet with directors of the DCE programs from each of the Concordia universities, at least one individual serving at the district level in the area of education, and other invited guests, to discuss ways in which we can best move forward together to address DCE ministry related issues.

Topics that have already been identified are

q               How do we best construct the DCEnet leadership team to provide optimal benefits to LEA members?

q               How can we work together to better link field DCEs, and provide them with additional resources?

q               How can we best advocate for DCE ministry, and what financial resources will be necessary to impact LEA’s ability to support it?

Please watch the DCEnet listserv for more information regarding the DCE Summit agenda, your opportunity to provide input in the discussions, and a summary of outcomes from the Summit.
